A monastery hidden in the Arpa River gorge

Gndevank Monastery is located in Vayots Dzor Province, in the gorge of the Arpa River, near the village of Gndevaz. The monastery is built on the rocky slope of the gorge, with the Arpa River flowing below.

Foundation (936)

The monastery was founded in 936 and is connected with the spiritual traditions of the Syunik diocese. The main church, dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, was built in the 10th century.

Architecture

It has a cross-domed plan, built of local dark stone that harmonizes beautifully with the natural environment of the gorge.

Today

Gndevank is one of the least visited yet most beautiful monasteries in Armenia, a wonderful “hidden gem” along the Noravank–Tatev route.
