Haghartsin Monastery
A monastery hidden in the forest
Haghartsin Monastery is located in Tavush Province, a few kilometers from Dilijan, deep in a dense forest, and its setting alone leaves an unforgettable impression. The road to the monastery passes through oak and beech woods, and suddenly, between the trees, the domes of the stone churches appear.
History and dating
The earliest buildings of the monastery date to the 10th century, but the main structures standing today were built in the 12th–13th centuries under the patronage of the Zakarian princes. During this period Haghartsin had a scriptorium, a school, and the status of a major pilgrimage center for all of Northern Armenia.
Architecture
The complex includes three churches — Saint Gregory, the Holy Mother of God, and Saint Stephen — as well as a gavit, a monastic burial vault, and several auxiliary buildings. The basin-shaped stone reservoir of the burial vault, the khachkars, and the fine carvings on the walls all demonstrate the high craftsmanship of the master stonemasons.
Today
Haghartsin is one of the most picturesque monasteries in Armenia, especially in autumn when the surrounding forest turns fiery red and orange. The monastery is easily accessible via the road from Dilijan and is an excellent stop for travelers along the North–South route.
