Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral
The cathedral of the Armenian nation's 1700th anniversary
The Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral was built in 2001 on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the Armenian people’s adoption of Christianity. It is located in the center of Yerevan and is the largest church in the capital.
Architecture
The cathedral is built according to the canons of traditional Armenian church architecture, while employing modern construction technologies. The building can accommodate about 1,700 people, symbolizing the 1,700 years that have passed since the adoption of Christianity.
Significance
The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the saint who preached Christianity in Armenia and in 301 laid the foundations of the Armenian Christian tradition.
Today
Today it is one of the main spiritual centers of Yerevan, where major religious ceremonies and national celebrations are held.
