Khndzoresk — Cave Village
What Is It
Khndzoresk is an ancient cave village carved into the walls of a dramatic gorge, inhabited until the mid-20th century. The gorge contains over 160 caves along with a church, a school and storage rooms still visible today.
The two sides of the village are now connected by a long swinging suspension bridge — a small adventure in itself — and unlike anything else in Armenia, with sweeping gorge views in every direction.
Some of the caves are easy to enter and still show traces of everyday life — soot-blackened ceilings, niches carved into the walls, half-collapsed rooms where families once cooked, slept and kept animals.
Khndzoresk is perfect if you like places that are a bit wild and a bit raw. The path down into the gorge, the gentle sway of the bridge and the silence inside the caves all combine into an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
What to Do
Cross the swinging bridge, explore the cave dwellings, photograph the layered gorge walls, and combine with Tatev Monastery for a full Syunik day trip.
