Khosrov Forest Reserve — Armenia's Oldest Protected Area
The Reserve
Khosrov Forest Reserve was established by Arshakuni king Khosrov III in the 4th century AD — one of the oldest protected natural areas in the world. Access requires a permit or a licensed guide. The gorges of the Astghik, Vahagn and Khosrov rivers run through dense mountain forest, creating a unique alpine ecosystem.
This is Armenia at its wildest — mountain forest, deep gorges, roaming wildlife and ancient ruins hidden among the trees. Semi-desert hills, rocky gorges, forested slopes and small waterfalls all meet within the same landscape.
The reserve is not a regular open national park, but there are specific public trails and guided routes that visitors can join, including hikes toward Astghik and Vahagn waterfalls and routes that link the Garni area with the outer parts of the reserve.
If you have already seen Garni and want to push a bit deeper into Armenia's wild side without committing to a multi-day trek, the accessible trails of Khosrov are an ideal next step — fewer cars, more rock and silence, and a strong sense of being very far from the city.
What to Do
Guided hikes on permitted trails, gorge walks, wildlife spotting and alpine landscape photography.
