Lake Sevan
Overview
Lake Sevan sits at around 1,900 m above sea level and is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, with a surface area of about 1,242 km². In summer it becomes a hub for swimming, water sports and fishing.
The lake is like Armenia's blue eye — a huge mirror set between mountains that changes colour with the time of day and the seasons: pale blue in the morning, bright and sparkling at noon, and glowing crimson at sunset.
The shores are lined with beaches, resorts and small villages. You can swim, take a boat out, relax in small bays, listen to the wind moving the waves and camp along the shore. Try the famous Sevan trout — ishkhan — an endemic species served in restaurants all along the shore.
What to Do
Swim at the beaches, try water sports, take a boat trip, visit Sevanavank monastery, watch the sunset, see the khachkars at Noratus and camp along the Sevan or Tsovinar shores.
How to Get There
