From the 4th to the 13th century

Hovhannavank is located in Aragatsotn Province, on the edge of the Kasagh River gorge in the village of Ohanavan, a few kilometers north of Saghmosavank. According to tradition, the spiritual history of the site goes back to the 4th century, when Saint Gregory the Illuminator founded a chapel here in the name of Saint John the Baptist.

13th-century reconstruction

The present monastic complex was built in 1216 by the Zakarian prince Vache Vachutyan. The main church of Saint Karapet and the large gavit were constructed at this time, and they are considered valuable examples of 13th‑century Armenian architecture.

Architecture

The gavit is the most impressive element of Hovhannavank, with its high arches, central opening for light, and walls adorned with khachkars. The sculptural decoration of the church’s exterior façade is also noteworthy for the characteristic details of the Zakarian style.

Today

Together with Saghmosavank, Hovhannavank is among the most visited monasteries of Aragatsotn. Its position on the edge of the gorge, the clean air, and the peaceful atmosphere make it an excellent stop on the road from Yerevan towards Mount Aragats or Amberd Fortress.
